Microsoft announced its Revolution Analytics purchase on January 23, just a couple of days ahead of Microsoft's second quarter FY 2015 earnings report, which is happening this coming Monday, January 26.

Revolution Analytics provides an "enterprise-class platform" for developing and deploying R-based analytic solutions that can scale across large data warehouses and Hadoop systems, and which can integrate with enterprise systems, according to Microsoft's blog post.

Revolution R customers include banks, financial services organizations, pharmaceutical companies, consulting companies, and manufacturing and technology companies.

Revolution Analytics company contributes to open source R projects such as ParallelR and RHadoop, as well. Microsoft will continue to support and evolve the open source and commercial distributions of Revolution R across multiple operating systems, including Mac and Linux, Microsoft officials said.

In 2013, Revolution Analytics signed a Hadoop partnership with Hortonworks, with Revolution developing so-called "in-Hadoop" predictive analytics to avoid importing and exporting data from Hadoop.

The Revolution Analytics team plans to continue to support the free Revolution R Open Project and will continue to offer technical support for R with Revolution R Plus subscriptions, officials with the Mountain View, Calif., company said in a blog post today.
